Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance

2010 - Richard Petty

  • 2010 PosterNASCAR great "The King” Richard Petty is on hand as the honoree for the 15th Annual Amelia Island Concours and the weekend crowd totals nearly 18,000 – once again reaffirming Petty’s place as stock car racing’s most popular driver ever.
  • The featured car is the newly restored and super sleek "Norman Timbs Special,” owned by Gary and Diane Cerveny and making its first public appearance since its restoration.
  • Canada’s RM Auctions, Amelia’s exclusive auction partner, reports another strong one-day total of $19 million; a second auction conducted by Gooding & Co. makes its first appearance at Amelia and brings in $16 million, making Amelia only the second concours to have more than one auction.
  • The "Three Greats” seminar happens before another packed Ritz-Carlton ballroom and American racing icon Carroll Shelby graciously fills in on the panel for an injured Sir Stirling Moss OBE; he joins Petty and drag racing legend Don Garlits.
  • The 40th anniversary of the ultra-dominant Porsche 917’s victories at the 1970 editions of the 24 Hours of Daytona and Le Mans is celebrated with Derek Bell MBE, Brian Redman, Vic Elford, Charlie Kemp, Hurley Haywood, and Gulf Weyer engineer John Horsman recounting their experiences with Porsche’s most famous endurance racer.
  • A new class appears on the show field: "Motor Trend Cover Cars.” Vehicles ranging from the futuristic to the odd are on display; spectators can expect to see more of this type class at future Amelia Island Concours.
  • The show field is open to the public on Saturday for the first time and the Mercedes-Benz "Star Lounge” hosts a very crowded Three Greats autograph session, which lasts long beyond its allotted time.
